Community partners are a big part of the education system in northern Nevada.  Many service organizations focus on youth and none more than Rotary International and the Knights of Columbus.

ACE High School has long been a community partner of the Rotary Club of Reno Centennial Sunset and in 2024 the school built a shed for the equestrian center at Marvin Picollo School.  Marvin Picollo is also a partner school of our Rotary Club and KofC Council #13842 at St Rose of Lima catholic church.

These two entities worked together to understand the needs of the equestrian center and the skills of the construction students at ACE.  The result was the delivery of a much needed 10’x12’ tack shed that was delivered in mid-May.  Recently, members of the Knights of Columbus painted the shed and turned the keys over to program director Sue Lennon.

We are most grateful to Bob DeRuse at ACE Charter High School and Sue Lennon at Marvin Picollo for their efforts in seeing the project through.  We also thank Don Eberlein with the Knights of Columbus and Joe Burgess with RCS Rotary for their vision and co-operation.

5K COMPLETES GIRLS ON THE RUN FALL SEASON

400 girls completed a 5K run on November18 at Reno High School to wrap the 2023 fall season for Girls On The Run (GOTR) https://www.girlsontherunsierras.org/ Reno Centennial Sunset Rotary (RCS) club members joined more than 200 volunteers to help make the event a huge success. A light rain and cool morning did not dampen the spirits of the 400 and their families as they circled the track and ran on nearby streets, cheered on by volunteers like RCS President Tom Keller.

GOTR seeks to help girls build confidence and create positive relationships through mentoring, physical activity, worthwhile projects and connection. With programs for Grades 3-5 and 6-8, GOTR develops a sense of responsibility and giving back. And these girls can think big - as one GOTR staffer said when projects were being discussed there were girls who would say “Let’s clean up Lake Tahoe!” “Let’s clean up the forest!”.

Adult coaches are critical to the GOTR program. Applications for the 2024 spring season - April through June - will be accepted through mid December. See the GOTR Sierras website above for more information. Since its launch in 2007, GOTR Sierras has worked with than 5500 local girls to help them connect with their inner strength and each other.

NEW SEASON IS FAST APPROACHING.  LET'S LEND A HELPING HAND!
