On Sat, Mar 17, 11 members and 4 volunteers from UNR's Coop Extension worked together to build a garden for students at the Mariposa Academy. The garden will be a major part of a new and innovative nutritional curriculum being prepared exclusively for Mariposa by UNR's Coop Extension. Member Ted Petersen donated his landscape architectural skills to this project, and the rest of us dug a 210 ft. trench to provide irrigation to the garden. We also built a dozen individual planters and spread mulch to control weeds and keep the area clean for the students. Final touches were applied by Downtown Rotary member Bud Tholl, as he donated time and materials to fence the garden area. Thanks to all who participated.
On Jan 20, 2007, 19 members and 4 clients painted the interior of one of the men's Ridge House residences on Vine St. This follows the same activity we conducted for one of the women's houses last summer. Members and their families have also donated hunderds of dollars of furniture and clothing so the clients can properly restart their lives. Special mention goes to member's spouse Peggy Musser, who has been a weekly donater at the ladies' residence.
Thanks to members Jim Annis, Chip Lindloff, Ralph Koss, Jean Irwin (and her son Kent), Bob Morris (and his son Tim), and Mike Haskell (and his wife Vicki) for helping paint the exterior of the Bailey Charter School's 3 portable classroom buildings on Saturday, October 14, 2006. On the same day, volunteers from other local businesses sodded the school's ball field. These 2 projects, along with the 36 pairs of shoes donated by our members, have made a major impact on Bailey's 300 students as they returned to class on Oct 16 from their 3 week break.
Thanks to all our members who donated balls, coloring books and batteries for the 4th Street Toys for Tots Christmas gift donation campaign. We received a nice letter of thanks from the group on behalf of all the kids. Thanks also to member Duane Upton for coordinating this activity.
